There is finally some respite on the horizon for commuters in Delhi.
If a Delhi government proposal goes through, auto drivers who turn down a fare, misbehave, or overcharge could face a fine of Rs 11,000.
The proposal is to be approved by the cabinet after discussions with the auto unions. Once approved, passengers can call up the number, compulsorily painted on all autos, whenever they face any problems with auto drivers.
The nearest police patrol vehicle will reach the spot within minutes, with power to slap a fine of Rs 11,000 for any violation of the rules.
Sources in the transport department say while the fine amount may be reduced after talks with the unions, it will still be enough to work as a deterrent.
