How Long Should it Take to Charge a Car Battery?

Blog · October 26, 2020

You should always take care of the core of your desired thing. And if you think of a car, its battery is the core and probably you are wandering on the internet to find the best possible ways and durations to ensure good health of your car battery. There are various types of charging methods and durations based on want of customers and user preferences.

How Long Should it Take to Charge a Car Battery

How Long Should it Take to Charge a Car Battery With a 12 V Charger?

The duration of charging with a 12volt charger depends mostly upon the supplied amperage of the charger we are using. It will take almost 12 hours to charge a battery with a 48 amperes supply.

But for the sake of the longevity of your car and the industry you should always look for a process where you can maintain the car battery for long. For that, a low amperage charger with 4 amperage supply is much more suitable.

How Long it Takes For Charging At 40 Amps?

These chargers have a high amperage and can charge batteries fast after being connected. It takes hardly an hour to charge the battery.

You can use a smart car charger in case you leave the charger connected for long as it will maintain a low amperage (2-4) as the battery gets fully charged and thus maintain good battery health.

How Long It Takes For Charging At 2 Amps?

For maintaining better health of the battery and the car, these small amperage chargers are used. A 48-ampere battery will take 24 hours to be charged with a 2 amps per hour charging.

This certainly helps and prevents the battery from overheating and maintains an overall good battery life for a long time.

With short amperage, this type of charger will charge a car battery in 12 hours and it is not suitable for quick charging. But for small batteries or those used in the motorbikes, these chargers can be used effectively.

These chargers can be connected for a long time and after full charging, the amperage becomes low and thus maintains healthy battery life.

How Long It Takes For Charging At 10 Amps?

On average it takes 5-6 hours of charging at this amperage. The time required to charge is inversely proportional to the open-circuit voltage in the battery and cold-cranking amps.

It’s neither a fast charger nor one which can be called slow. You can even keep the charger connected overnight.

The trickle chargers operate between 0.8 amperages and 4 amperages. It takes 12-60 hours to charge a car battery with a trickle charger.

There is no risk of overheating with these chargers and they ensure good battery life.

Determining the charge time for your Car Battery

For calculating the amount of time needed to charge a car battery, you have to calculate the reserve capacity of it. For finding out the amp-hours of a battery, the reserve capacity should be multiplied with 0.6. For a battery that has 120 minutes reserve capacity, according to the formula, it will have 72 amp-hours approx.

A voltmeter can be used for calculating the voltage of the battery of the open-circuit type. It is the voltage of the battery when it is not in connection with the circuit. Charging the battery before testing the voltage should be avoided.

Conclusion

With the advent of the automobile industry, it is obvious to know the charging procedures and charging durations for different sorts of batteries on the supplies of amperage. Charging at 2amps will take 24 hours while on the other hand, 40 amps charging will take less than an hour. Each type of charging has its advantage on the requirement of the customers.

Some of you will need to charge the battery fast and some may try to keep the charging on overnight thus charging it slowly. But maintenance of battery life is very important and you should be very careful while choosing the type of charging. Without such knowledge, it will be like sailing with no ship in the sea.
