In a Toyota RAV4, a blinking VSC light is a common occurrence. A never-ending flash of VSC light in the mid-highway is more than enough to send shivers down your spine!

How to reset VSC light on Toyota RAV4? Thankfully, you can reset it just by pressing some buttons. Resetting the VSC light will buy you some time to look into what’s actually cooking inside your car by driving it safely to a nearby shop.

What Is The Normal Activity of VSC Light?

The full form of VSC is Vehicle Stability Control.  It has a great bond with Traction Control (TRAC). 

The VSC light generally turns on when you switch on the engine. Then it turns off by itself within seconds.

However, there are situations when this light will stay turned on. Now, this is something to be concerned about.

There can be three different scenarios:

  • Only the VSC light is on
  • CEL (Check Engine Light) and 4WD/TRAC (4-Wheel Drive/Traction Control) lights are on alongside the VSC light
  • ABS (Antilock Braking System), BRAKE, and occasionally TRAC lights are on alongside the VSC light

Now let’s look at the possible causes of these scenarios:

Only the VSC light is on

This happens due to a disturbance in any of the following systems:

  • VSC
  • Traction control system
  • Auto LSD
  • DAC
  • HAC

CEL and 4WD/TRAC lights are on alongside the VSC light

CEL and 4WD/TRAC lights are on alongside the VSC light

This mainly happens because of a malfunctioning engines. The malfunction can result from a worn-out spark plug or misfiring coil, faulty O2 sensor, or loose gas cap. When this happens, the ECM automatically shuts down VSC and 4WD systems.

ABS , BRAKE, and occasionally TRAC lights are on alongside the VSC light

A problem with the brake system causes this. This also symbolizes a sort of ABS failure.

Whenever the VSC light flashes, your engine won’t perform at its best, and you won’t get cruise control. However, you can still drive your Toyota RAV4 efficiently by resetting the VSC light.

Let’s see how it’s done:

Step 1: Park your car in a suitable place.

Step 2: Turn off the engine.

Step 3: Press the VSC switch.

Step 4: Hold it for two to three seconds.

Step 5: This will turn off the ‘Traction Control System’ and VSC system.

Step 6: You’ll see the ‘TRAC OFF’ and ‘VSC OFF’ signals.

Step 7: Press the VSC switch once more.

Step 8: TRAC and VSC signals will go out by then.

Step 9: This will reset your VSC light.

This is a temporary solution just to take your car for further maintenance. Don’t even think about letting it be.

What Should I Do Afterwards?

We have discussed three different cases where your VLC light keeps flashing. Here are some bonus tips to resolve those issues:

  • Mostly loose gas caps and faulty wheel speed sensor cause VSC malfunction. Check them out and repair or replace them accordingly if the VSC light blinks alone.
  • In case of CEL flash, check for the part that is causing engine malfunction and replace it. If you have an O2 sensor issue, this video can be helpful.
  • Take advice from an expert mechanic if your ABS is disturbed. It is really sensitive as brakes can cause life-threatening accidents.
